Firefighters rescued a therapy dog Tuesday morning and reunited her with her owners after a house fire in Northeast Brainerd.

The dog, Chloey, was trembling in her owner's arms in the front yard, as police and firefighting activity swirled around the pair.

Resident Matt Knier said he and family were in their house on the 200 block of First Avenue, when their smoke alarms suddenly started going off. When looking for the source of the alarm, they found white and black smoke in his father-in-law's room, coming from a vent.

All of the people in the house were able to escape successfully, but his fiancee Anna Johnson's therapy dog was briefly unaccounted for, fueling concern for the dog's life.

"It's going to ruin her whole world," Knier said, before the dog was found.

The fire also caused an estimated $30,000 in damages and the street was temporarily blocked by police.

The Brainerd Fire Department responded at 11:47 a.m. after Knier called 911. They located a fire in a lower level bedroom, which was quickly extinguished. There was minor smoke damage on the house's lower level. Firefighters assisted in getting several pets out of the house, a release from the fire department stated.

No injuries were reported.
