Olson presides over first meeting after appointment

BAXTER - Mayor Darrel Olson, who was officiating at his first regular council session in more than a month, thanked the council for the vote of confidence in appointing him mayor.

BAXTER - Mayor Darrel Olson, who was officiating at his first regular council session in more than a month, thanked the council for the vote of confidence in appointing him mayor.

Olson was forced to resign because of an obscure statute requiring a 30-day separation from retiring from his Crow Wing County job and his elected position with Baxter. He also thanked Holman, who served as acting mayor, for taking on the extra workload.

"It meant a lot to me," Olson said of the council's confidence. After he was forced to resign in January, Olson said he was heartened by hearing from numerous people.

"It just lifted my spirits because I was concerned what the public might think of this whole thing," Olson said.

In other business, the council:

Approved a change to start an off-sale liquor license and tobacco license awarded to Super One Liquors a month earlier to start on May 1 through June 30.

Awarded the the city's professional engineering and related engineering services contract to Short Elliott and Hendrickson for the 2015 mill and overlay and full-depth reclamation projects. The amount of the contract is not to exceed $114,854.

Authorized a contract with the Brainerd Lakes Area Economic Development Corporation for $22,500.

Awarded the contract for clearing of all right-of-way and easements for the 2015 Isle Drive Extension project to Pratt's Affordable Excavating for $33,360.

Moved a March 12 meeting for Excelsior Road project assessment hearing to March 19.

A presentation and award of equipment to the police department regarding the state's program Toward Zero Deaths, but that was canceled because of Tuesday's snowstorm.

Rescheduled Administrator Gordon Heitke's performance evaluation from March 18 to 6 p.m. March 30. Heitke is currently on medical leave.

Met in closed session to discuss land acquisition negotiations for the Isle Drive road project.
