A Pine River nonprofit organization is seeking donated wheelchairs, walkers, canes and crutches.
Joni and Friends Minnesota is taking on a challenge to collect 5,000 wheelchairs by 2020. Donated wheelchairs, walkers, canes and crutches can be dropped off at Pine River Group Home from now until June 2. Drop-off times are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 3.
Joni and Friends is a nonprofit organization ministering to people with disabilities and their families. One of their ministries, Wheels for the World, helps people whose mobility is impaired, giving them the gift of hope. Joni and Friends collects manual wheel chairs, metal crutches and canes and collapsible walkers.
The wheelchairs are refurbished by inmates in a several prisons throughout the United States. The cost of refurbishing a wheelchair is $150, this cost is covered by donations. The refurbished wheelchairs are delivered to developing countries. This summer they will be going to China, Peru, Brazil and Romania where volunteer teams will fit the wheelchairs to the new owners.
