WALKER - Cass County Board authorized County Engineer David Enblom Tuesday to hire an outside professional for up to $5,000 to design a paved parking lot and provide cost estimates for the current gravel parking area south of the courthouse.
Enblom reported to the board the gravel lot currently serves about 40 vehicles. If it were to be paved and parking slots marked on the pavement, he estimates the lot could hold about 60 vehicles.
Once paving cost estimates are known, the board will decide whether or not to do the paving.
The commissioners authorized Enblom to have the county highway department sign an agreement to accept state and federal money, oversee construction and pay contractors on behalf of Leech Lake Band for a pedestrian and bicycle trail on the highway ditch back slope along U.S. Highway 2.
The trail will run about one mile, connecting a housing area with the city of Bena.

The board also agreed to permit Minnesota Department of Transportation to install Mississippi River Trail signs on county roads in northern Cass, which parallel the river. These roads will be designated as a part of a larger bicycle trail system along highway shoulders near the Mississippi River.
The board voted to relinquish interest in an access road easement from County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 11 to Bungey Bay Lane NW (Sleepy Hollow Lane), which has served residents adjacent to the west end of Bungey Bay of Woman Lake.
The property owners over whose land the easement had been located recently installed a new road on the border of their property to replace the old easement. The easement was first
created in 1958 as a part of rebuilding CSAH 11.
