HASTINGS - A small airplane piloted by a Hastings man crashed in the backwaters of the Mississippi River on Friday.
The pilot had dropped off an ice fisherman on North Lake between Hastings and Red Wing and was attempting to take off from the ice when his plane went through the ice. It became partially submerged in the water, which was about 6 feet deep. The pilot was not injured and the airplane was pulled from the water.
The crash occurred shortly after 5 p.m.
The pilot’s name has not yet been released.
