Police arrest man after shooting inside downtown Brainerd bar

Witnesses and surveillance video indicated the suspect later pointed it at a wall and shot it, with the gun then firing. The suspect fled from the bar on foot prior to officers’ arrival.

A 34-year-old man who allegedly attempted to shoot someone inside a downtown Brainerd bar before firing into a wall Sunday, Nov. 8, is in jail awaiting arraignment.

The Brainerd Police Department responded to the call shortly before 8 p.m. at O’Neary’s Irish Pub. Police learned there was disturbance involving the man and another patron in the bar. At one point, he pointed a handgun at the other patron and attempted to shoot him but the gun did not go off, police reported.

Witnesses and surveillance video indicated the suspect later pointed it at a wall and shot it, with the gun then firing. The suspect fled from the bar on foot prior to officers’ arrival.

People inside the bar were familiar with the suspect. Baxter Police officers assisted and located the suspect outside his home in southwest Brainerd. The man was in the Crow Wing County Jail awaiting arraignment Monday while the matter was under review with the Crow Wing County Attorney’s Office.

A firearm was located near O’Neary’s and is believed to be the gun involved.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office also assisted Brainerd police in this investigation.
