The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is hosting a public meeting on Wednesday, July 25, to gather input on the potential closure of a portion of Gull Lake Dam Road in East Gull Lake.

The meeting is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the East Gull Lake City Hall, 10790 Squaw Point Road, East Gull Lake.

Evaluation of the purpose and need for the public road began after the St. Paul District completed emergency repairs on a section of the river bank adjacent to the road in November 2017, which were necessary to stabilize the slope between the road and river. During the bank stabilization project, concerns were raised regarding the compatibility of the road with the surrounding recreation mission, protection of cultural resources and the constraints of a single-lane roadway over the Gull Lake Dam.

During consultation with tribal representatives regarding the road repair, a request was made that the Corps of Engineers permanently close the section of road due to its proximity to a Native American sacred site.

Gull Lake Dam Road is a public road that passes over federal property and is maintained by the city of East Gull Lake under a 1926 real estate license.
