Radon kits available for Cass County residents

WALKER — Cass County residents and property owners can obtain a free radon gas test kit from Cass County Health, Human and Veterans Services.

Radon is an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas commonly occurring in soils in this area, which can seep into buildings. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., causing 21,000 deaths annually.

In homes with levels over 4 pCi/L, the recommended action level for radon, homeowners can take remediation steps to lower the level coming into their home. The first step to identifying this is to use a test kit.

Kits are available at HHVS in Walker and at the county government building in Backus and at Family Centers in Walker, Pine River, Remer and Pillager.
