The Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians will host an Ojibwe Language and Culture Camp 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, July 24-26, for the sixth consecutive year.

The three-day gabeshiwin (camp) will feature canoeing and swimming, lacrosse, moccasin game, drum and dance, plant identification, crafts, birch bark making, leatherwork, traditional Anishinaabe teachings and more.

The camp's main location will be the Ponemah Round House in the backwoods of Obaashiing (Ponemah). Transportation and meals are provided.

This is a time that Red Lake children, families and community look forward to, a news release stated, as it provides them an opportunity to immerse themselves in Ojibwemowin and the rich culture of the Anishinaabe.

"Great efforts are made to teach children the importance of kinship, language and culture; this helps to build confidence," the release stated. "Elders play a large role as teachers for the teachers."

Admission is free but limited in number and is open to kids ages 6-18 years old. Red Lake Chemical Health, Red Lake Economic Development and Planning, and Red Lake Waasabiik Immersion School host the camp.

The Gabeshiwin is part of Red Lake Nation's Ojibwemowin (Ojibwe language) revitalization efforts.

It's a community event and everyone is welcome. Those with additional questions may contact Reyna Lussier of Red Lake Chemical Health at 218-679-1547 or Liz White of Red Lake Economic Development and Planning at 218-679-1462.
