BEMIDJI - A Redby man was sentenced Tuesday in Beltrami County Court to 7½ years in prison for stabbing a man in May.
Orland James Spears, 23, received 69 months in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud for first-degree burglary, with credit for 96 days served. Spears also was sentenced consecutively to 21 months in prison for second-degree assault.
Spears pleaded guilty in June to stabbing the man at the man’s Beltrami County home.
The man allowed Spears to use his telephone from outside the front door but refused to jump-start Spears’ vehicle, which turned out to be a stolen van from Red Lake, authorities said.
Spears pushed the door open and stabbed the man twice in the chest, according to a criminal complaint. Spears fled on foot and was caught by the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit.
