More than 100 students from 11 Region 5 high schools Thursday will head to the Central Lakes College Staples campus for the Regional Senior High Knowledge Bowl Meet.
Teams from Aitkin, Brainerd, Henning, Little Falls, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, Nevis, Pillager, Pequot Lakes, Pierz, Pine River-Backus and Staples-Motley will take part in the interdisciplinary academic competition. The top four teams from the meet will represent Region 5 at the 2017 Minnesota Service Cooperative State Meet, April 6-7.
During a Knowledge Bowl meet, teams of five work together to quickly solve questions related to all areas of learning typical of secondary educational programs. Meets are conducted in rounds, beginning with one written-question round and three to five oral-question rounds. No team is eliminated during a meet and every team participates in every round.
The NJPA coordinates Region 5 junior and senior high Knowledge Bowl programs. Carol Jackson, NJPA administrative assistant, has been in charge of all scheduling, communication, and competition logistics for knowledge bowl since 2009. She describes meets as high-speed and high-energy.
"Knowledge Bowl is an academic competition with so much camaraderie, team spirit and the students just really have a great time," Jackson said in a news release. "It uses everything they've learned in school and team work is really an important part of being successful."
