Sen. Carrie Ruud, R-Breezy Point, recently attended the annual Great Lakes Legislative Caucus meeting in Quebec City, Quebec.
The Great Lakes Legislative Caucus is a nonpartisan group of state and provincial lawmakers from eight U.S. states (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin) and two Canadian provinces (Ontario and Quebec). Minnesota Sen. Ann
Rest serves as chair of the caucus. The Midwestern Office of The Council of State Governments provides staffing services for the caucus and funding for the caucus is provided by The Joyce Foundation.
The Great Lakes Legislative Caucus has three primary goals. First, facilitate the regional exchange of ideas and information on key Great Lakes issues. Second, strengthen the role of state and provincial legislators in the policymaking process. Third, promote the restoration and protection of the Great Lakes.
Ruud was joined by approximately 10 other Minnesota legislators who heard from experts on a number of topics including, Federal efforts in Canada and the U.S. to protect and restore the Great Lakes, plastic pollution in the Great Lakes and a focus on the St. Lawrence discussing the significance of the St. Lawrence Seaway and its impact on the region's economy.

"This was a great opportunity for legislators from all around the Great Lakes Region to discuss and learn about the challenges in protecting one of our greatest natural assets," said Ruud.
