Sen. Carrie Ruud, R-Breezy Point, was recently appointed to serve on the newly formed Legislative Commission on Surrogacy. The committee was created through legislation passed during the 2016 legislative session and is made up of 12 legislators along with representatives from the Department of Human Services, Department of Health and a family court referee, a release said.
The commission is tasked with developing recommendations on public policy and laws regarding surrogacy through public hearings, research, and deliberation. A report including its recommendations must be submitted to the chairs and ranking minority members of the legislative committees with jurisdiction over health and judiciary in the House of Representatives and Senate by Dec. 15, 2016.
"The commission will deal with some very complex issues and will face a very quick deadline," Ruud said in a news release. "Surrogacy is an issue the legislature has not been willing to address in the past few years and this commission should help educate the legislature and work toward legislation to regulate this complicated issue."
