Brainerd Public Schools is among several area schools closed Monday, Jan. 7, due to weather.

Brainerd schools also will not have early childhood classes, KinderClub or any before or after school care. Brainerd Skylert system first alerted parents of a two-hour late start at about 5 a.m. After evaluating road conditions, the district decided to close for the day about 7:40 a.m.

Other schools closed for the day are Aitkin, Crosby, Little Falls, McGregor, Pequot Lakes, Pierz, Pillager, Pine River, Staples, Verndale, Wadena, Walker, Crosslake Community School, Discovery Woods Montessori, Isle Public School and Nay Ah Shing School.

Central Lakes College in Brainerd and Staples is two hours late. The Brainerd Public Library is opening an hour later at 10 a.m.

Traffic moved slowly along Highway 210 in Brainerd as people were making their morning commute. The National Weather Service of Duluth reported snow quickly changed to freezing drizzle during the overnight. Northern Crow Wing and all of Cass and Aitkin counties were in a winter weather advisory until 9 a.m. Monday.

Temperatures are expected to be a high of 37 degrees in Brainerd, with a west wind of 5-15 mph. There will be another slight chance of snow showers between 1-4 a.m. Tuesday.
