The month of September has been established as National Preparedness Month for several years and this year it continues with a theme that gets people nationwide thinking about some of the basic concerns for all of us in the time of disaster.
This year's theme is ''Be Disaster Aware, Take Action to Prepare." Throughout the next four weeks, each week will highlight another preparedness topic that makes it easy for all Americans to take care of themselves in the event of a major disaster.
The national Ready Campaign established four building blocks of preparedness: Be informed, make a plan, build a kit and get involved. During National Preparedness Month, all preparedness agencies are asking that as individuals, families, communities, schools and businesses we take action to be Disaster Aware and taking actions to be prepared.
The weekly themes will make it easy for all families to participate:
Week one: Will help us better understand how to reconnect with our families and loved ones after a disaster by having a communication plan.

Week two: This week will help us know how to plan for specific needs before a disaster.
Week three: The third week will provide detailed information on how to build an emergency kit and what it should contain.
Week four, five: The final week will give families, schools, communities and businesses an opportunity to take all of this information and practice for an emergency.
