The Morrison County Sheriff's Office received several reports of mailboxes being damaged and mail being tampered with last weekend in Belle Prairie Township, east of Little Falls.

The sheriff's office is asking residents to be alert for any unusual activity occurring around mailboxes. Anyone noticing anything suspicious should contact the sheriff's office immediately.

Sheriff Shawn Larsen would like to remind residents of ways to protect themselves against mail theft:

• Mail letters at the post office or hand them to a letter carrier rather than placing them in your mailbox.

• Pick mail up promptly after delivery. Don't leave it in your mailbox overnight.

• Never send cash in the mail.

• Tell the post office when you will be out of town so they can hold your mail until you return.
