The 56-year-old man who died Saturday, Nov. 17, following a gunshot wound while deer hunting in Aitkin County was identified as Gregory J. Nase of Columbus.
The Aitkin County Sheriff's Office reported the man was hunting with family on family-owned land in Milward Township-not Pliny Township as previously reported-about 6 miles northeast of McGrath. The 911 calls were received by the sheriff's office at 12:51 p.m. Saturday.
It was reported the family group was hunting together making a deer "drive" for a wounded deer while others were standing. A shot or shots were reportedly fired at a moving deer, appearing to strike the victim.
Nase was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of death is a gunshot wound and it is under investigation by the sheriff's office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The Minnesota State Patrol and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Enforcement assisted at the scene.
