HASTINGS - Archaeologists believe that skeletal remains found this week at a Hastings construction site are from the early 1800s.
The remains were found Wednesday by crews working on a new CVS Pharmacy.
It appears as though the remains belong to a middle-aged woman, and evidence found in the area suggests they are from the early 19th century.
A number of tacks and nails were found around the remains, leading investigators to conclude that a coffin once held the body of the woman. The wood from the coffin has disintegrated over the last 200 years, leaving just the tacks, nails and bones.
Archaeologists have concluded that based on the gravesite, the woman was not Native American. They hope to perform tests on the tacks and nails to further narrow down the time period of the burial.
