ST. CLOUD - A Stearns County jury Thursday convicted a St. Cloud man of first-degree arson for setting fire to the home of a woman who had recently ended a relationship with him.

Desmond Lamart Jones, 39, is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 5.

He had been accused of setting fire to a St. Cloud residence June 25, a week after Jones pleaded guilty to fleeing police and driving while intoxicated. He had been released from jail pending sentencing.

A witness saw Jones running from the residence after hearing a "whoosh" sound and seeing flames and smoke, according to court records.

Investigators found a gas can next to the damaged area of the residence. A woman who also lived at the house told police she had recently ended a relationship with Jones and that he had been harassing her.

When officers found Jones, he was wearing clothing that matched the description given by the man who saw him running away from the burning house.
