The Salvation Army in Brainerd is partnering with the United States Postal Service for the "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive scheduled Saturday.

People may simply leave a bag of food near their mailbox and a letter carrier will pick it up.

For the 25th year in a row, letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns will collect food in what has become the largest one-day food drive in the nation, it states in a news release. Since it began, more than one billion pounds of food have been donated.

"Every last donation goes to the families here in the Brainerd lakes area," Lt. Grant Holloway, Brainerd Salvation Army administrator, stated in a news release. "It's a great pleasure to be working with the postal carriers again, last year was a tremendous success."

The food drive is a perfect time, the Salvation Army states, as many families who rely on the schools to provide free meals for their children during the school year struggle to make ends meet in the summer time.

"You might not think it, but summer is busy at the food shelf. We have a lot of people in need of assistance and fewer donations coming in so it's a balancing act, but this event definitely helps," Holloway stated.

Holloway asks that people make sure any food they donate has not expired. If the expiration date has long passed, food shelves have to throw it away.

Volunteers are also needed to help sort through all of the food, contact the Brainerd Salvation Army to sign up.
