The 2016 State Speech Tournament is planned Friday and Saturday at Lakeville North High School.

The Class A competition will be Friday.

The tournament features the top three qualifiers from each of eight Class A sections and from each of eight Class AA sections in 13 different speech categories. A team championship will also be awarded for the first time this year.

The 2016 tournament qualifiers represent 165 high school teams-101 Class A teams and 64 Class AA teams. Students from 318 Minnesota high schools participated in speech during the current school year on 192 Class A teams and 111 Class AA teams.

The categories are-serious interpretation of prose, serious interpretation of drama, serious interpretation of poetry, humorous interpretation, storytelling, extemporaneous reading, creative expression, original oratory, great speeches, discussion, extemporaneous speaking, informative speaking, and duo interpretation.

In Class A: Elijah Sams of Staples Motley will return to defend his title in creative expression; and Matthew Koring of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, who placed eighth in humorous interpretation last year, will return in the same category.
