Gov. Mark Dayton announced Friday the commencement of a process to fill the vacancy for the Minnesota National Guard Adjutant General.

The vacancy will occur with upcoming retirement of Maj. Gen. Richard Nash, Adjutant General of the Minnesota National Guard, at the end of October, a news release from Dayton's office said.

"I thank Maj. Gen. Richard Nash for his extraordinary service to our state and country, which includes his serving seven years as the Adjutant General of the Minnesota National Guard," Dayton said. "Gen. Nash has provided superb leadership for the Guard and the people of Minnesota. His devotion to our Guardsmen and women and their families has been incomparable.

"I look forward to receiving the recommendations of the committee to select the next leader of the Minnesota National Guard."

Dayton created the Committee on Adjutant General Selection to aid in the review and selection process for the vacancy. The committee will consider applicants and offer recommendations to Dayton.
