DULUTH - A suspect has been arrested in the stabbing of a University of Minnesota Duluth football player last month, Duluth police said.
Xavier Devon Davis, 23, was arrested without incident just after noon Friday at Canal Park Drive and Railroad Street in Duluth, police said. A warrant was out for his arrest on suspicion of stabbing UMD running back Austin Sikorski on Aug. 2.
Davis was taken to the St. Louis County Jail on a formal charge of second-degree assault.
Sikorski, 22, a senior running back for the Bulldogs, was found to have a stab wound to his lower right abdomen after Duluth police received a call to a street fight. He was treated for his injuries at St. Luke’s hospital.
Police said in a release that Sikorski was unable to communicate very well, was intoxicated and hurting. Officers spoke to multiple witnesses in the area who were also very intoxicated. Through follow-up investigation it was learned that Sikorski was in a fight with a man near 1st Avenue West and 1st Street. It was also reported that Sikorski ran from that area and was chased by some men. Sikorski met up with his friend at Lake Avenue and Superior Street, where he collapsed.
