A 33-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were arrested Monday following a police chase - where speeds of up to 100 mph were reported - that began in Baxter and ended near Aitkin, according to the Brainerd Police Department.

Around 11:30 p.m., Brainerd Police were alerted of a theft incident at Wal-Mart Store in Baxter, involving a male and female who were leaving the store in a white vehicle. Baxter Police radioed that the vehicle involved was eastbound on Washington Street at a high rate of speed in northwest Brainerd. Brainerd Police observed the vehicle as it continued east through Brainerd. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle but it continued eastbound at a very high rate of speed.

The vehicle crashed into a light pole on Washington Street at Kingwood Street and continued east at very high speeds, refusing to stop for police, police said.

As the vehicle continued east on Highway 210, other law enforcement agencies were alerted. The Minnesota State Patrol located the vehicle on Crow Wing County Road 12 between Brainerd and Deerwood after Brainerd officers had lost sight of it. The chased continued east from County Road 12 to Highway 210. Near Aitkin, law enforcement there deployed tire deflation devices and the vehicle eventually ran off the roadway near the 40 Club Inn and Restaurant in Aitkin.

After the vehicle crashed the occupants fled on foot. The Minnesota State Patrol helicopter responded and assisted officers on the ground in locating the two suspects.
