MINNEAPOLIS - An SUV crashed into a North Minneapolis bus shelter late Monday afternoon, killing a woman and injuring a man standing inside, according to police.
The crash occurred about 5:15 p.m. at the Metro Transit bus stop at 45th and Lyndale avenues.
The female driver of the SUV, as well as a male passenger, were not hospitalized. An investigation into the crash, including any possible charges, was ongoing as of late Monday.
Police spokesman John Elder said the SUV was idling at a nearby McDonald’s, when it suddenly accelerated in reverse, hitting a parked car, a tree, a garbage can, and then the shelter.
A woman in the shelter died at the scene; the injured man, reportedly the woman’s boyfriend, fled the scene on foot but was found by police a short distance away. He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Elder said investigators did not believe, based on early indications, that drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
