After another cold night, the lakes area should be looking forward to a welcome warmup.
The overnight low was expected to drop to zero after Tuesday's high of 27 degrees led to a sunny if somewhat chilly day. The sun's springtime strength is evident these days and after the time shift, the light lingers well into the evening hours. Starting today, the temperature gauge will start to go along with the flow if the forecast is any indication.
After hitting a high of 60 degrees on March 6-7, temperatures dropped. Records with the National Weather Service in Duluth show highs in the mid-20s or teens in the last six days. Temperatures have ranged from 5 to 20 degrees colder than average. The normal high this time of year is 37 degrees. Even with the colder temperatures, it's still less of winter than the heavy snow hitting the East Coast.
In the lakes area, today should finally go back above freezing with a high of 34 degrees beneath sunny skies and with calm winds. Starting Thursday and through the weekend, highs should reach the 40s. There is a chance of rain and snow late Thursday into early Friday morning. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. Saturday is expected to be mostly sunny and mild. A chance of rain returns Sunday night before skies clear for the start of the new week. Spring officially starts Monday with highs that may be close to 50 degrees.
