CROSSLAKE
Crosslake may be tourist-friendly, but it soon could be recognized for its friendliness to birds as well, the Echo Journal reported. The city formed a committee to consider applying for designation as a Bird City by Audubon Minnesota. To be considered a Bird City, the city council must pass a resolution recognizing International Migratory Bird Day and plan a coinciding event. Communities must also complete several tasks associated with best practices for bird protection.

A first-ever acoustic telemetry study will track the walleye population in Mille Lacs Lake, the Mille Lacs Messenger reported. The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Department of Natural Resources will lead the study, aimed to determine the factors impacting the juvenile walleye population. To gather data, 61 receivers will be placed throughout the lake in a variety of habitats about 3,000 meters apart. Both adult and juvenile fish will be implanted with transmitters and tagged externally to track their movements. Data collected by the receivers will include water temperature, water pressure, range, travel distance, habitat, light and growth.
WALKER
After recently revealing major financial concerns with the Walker Area Community Center, leaders say the future appears to be brighter, the Walker Pilot-Independent reported. A column written by Kim Schultz, the center's president, reported several positive steps in the right direction. This includes income from events, an increase in membership fees, a rebate from Minnesota Power and several potential income sources in the works.
In May, Schultz told the Pilot-Independent donations dropped dramatically and heating and electric bills were piling up.
