BAXTER-Forestview Middle School eighth-grader Karlton Anderson won the Brainerd Public Schools-level National Geographic GeoBee Friday, Jan. 25, after outlasting eight students.
National Geographic sponsors a geography bee every year for middle school students. About 500 eighth-graders at Forestview competed in two rounds of the bee and the top nine students were named finalists-Karlton Anderson, Jack Anderson, Mitchell Brau, Mason Kuepers, Amber Jacobson, Jack Lusti, Jake Stockinger, Cayden Sumption and Keaton Walkowiak.
The top nine students then competed in the oral competition Friday in the media center at Forestview. Karlton Anderson took first place; Sumption took second; and Lusti was third. Karlton Anderson will move on to take a state qualifying test online, through National Geographic. It will be scored against all the other school champions and the top 100 scores will move on to a statewide competition later this spring.
