Trumpeter Swans Grace the Mississippi River

As the cold temperatures of late fall and winter cause the Mississippi River near Brainerd to freeze, flocks of Trumpeter Swans gather near Green's Point. The sounds of the big birds can be heard along the banks of the river for miles. The swans come to the area to feed on the wild rice that has fallen in the shallow water in the fall.

Graduated from Ridgewater Community College with an AA degree and my first taste of newspapering. I worked a summer on the Ortonville Independent as a reporter and photographer.
