MONTEVIDEO - Two brothers were killed in a plane crash after taking off from the Chippewa County – Montevideo Airport on Sunday afternoon, the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department reported Monday.
Mark Orville Schultz, 52, of Sleepy Eye, and Steven John Schultz, 51, of Brooklyn Center, died when the small, two-seat aircraft they were in crashed in a soybean field about one-half mile north of the Jennie-O Turkey Store plant on the north edge of Montevideo at 3:47 p.m.
The sheriff’s office reported that the plane had just taken off, and appeared to be making a left turn when its right wing went straight up, as if it had caught a gust of wind.
It is not known which of the two men was piloting the craft. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that either of the men could have flown the plane.
