Two Brainerd individuals have been selected to join the volunteer board of directors of Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity.

Both individuals bring a unique perspective to the board, as well as a history of participation with the organization, the organization reported.

Claire Rud has been actively engaged in local organizations for years as a long-term Heartland Symphony Orchestra violinist, a Lakes Area Music Festival volunteer, a member of the board of directors for the YMCA, and she lends her skills to several committees with Lord of Life Lutheran Church. Rud's father was a Master Builder for Habitat for Humanity in Sioux Falls and her son, Christopher, served on the collegiate board for Habitat for Humanity while at Concordia College.

The Ruds hosted the Concordia group for the Women's Build last fall. Claire Rud stated she believes in the mission of Habitat for Humanity to build homes together as a community for families in need.

"The exciting part is what happens after, when these families have a safe place to live and live in hope, not just survival mode," Rud stated in a news release.

When asked why she wants to step into this leadership role Rud responded, "I can't imagine any other result but a stronger community and world. Now who wouldn't want to be involved in that?"

Heather Windjue, Brainerd, has extensive background in leadership roles and a passion to see measurable housing improvements in our community. She is enthusiastic to bring her business skills to the board of directors, which she acquired through the development and expansion of companies. She also recently started her own consulting company. Windjue is an active member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, serving on the board of education, and she is active with the chamber of commerce.

"It impacts all of us when some don't have a place to call home, a place they are proud to call home," Windjue said of Habitat for Humanity. For Windjue, affordable housing provides more than shelter. She reported the security and "sense of home" from adequate living conditions contributes to the family's future: "I have been passionate about this for a long time."

Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity serves families in Cass, Crow Wing and Hubbard counties with affordable homeownership.
