The Minnesota Department of Transportation is hosting an upcoming open house on the South Sixth Street reconstruction planned for 2018.
The open house is 6:30-8:30 p.m. July 25 at Brainerd City Hall, 501 Laurel St. The project team will give a short presentation at 7 p.m. and attendees can learn about tentative construction staging, detour plans, ask questions and meet one-on-one with project staff.
Preparation work for the project begins this fall, which includes some single-lane closures. Construction, with segments of street and sidewalk closures, and detours begin in early spring of 2018. Access to businesses and residences will be maintained during the construction project.
The project will reconstruct South Sixth Street between Highway 210 and Joseph Street in Brainerd and includes replacing water and sewer lines underneath the street. Features of the project include:
• Installing pedestrian access improvements, including bike lanes,

• Upgrading signal systems at Highway 210, Laurel Street, Oak Street and Quince Street,
• Upgrading overhead safety street lighting,
• Replacing all road signs.
The project is scheduled to be let for bids Sept. 22 and completed by fall of 2018. South Sixth Street, which is also known as Business Highway 371, will be reconstructed to have five lanes of traffic-two northbound and southbound lanes and a continuous center left turn lane-from Highway 210/Washington Street to Quince Street.
From Quince Street to Joseph Street, the roadway will include three lanes-one northbound and one southbound lane and a continuous center left turn lane.
The project is estimated to cost $7.5 million. The highway was originally constructed in 1957. MnDOT reports the existing pavement is nearing the end of its life and existing sidewalks do not meet accessibility standards. In addition, MnDOT stated the city of Brainerd's aging underground sewer and water utilities are deteriorated, with several breaks in recent years.
