A 21-year-old Brainerd woman died and another driver was critically injured Thursday morning, May 31, following a head-on crash in foggy conditions.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office was called to the crash at 4:31 a.m. involving three vehicles southeast of Brainerd. The vehicle with the fatality caught on fire and burned. The crash occurred on Crow Wing County Highway 2 near the intersection with Thesing Road in Daggett Brook Township.

The sheriff's office reported a third vehicle collided with one of vehicles involved in the initial crash. Witnesses of the crash reported foggy conditions, the sheriff's office reported. The National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory for the area, which was in effect from 12:55 a.m. until 9 a.m. Thursday.

"The area of the crash had very limited visibility due to fog," the sheriff's office reported.

The Brainerd woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Another driver was transported by ambulance to Essentia Health-St. Joseph's Medical Center with critical injuries. The third driver was not injured. The names of those involved are being held pending notification of family members.
