Central Lakes College's Verse Like Water series will host Juan Felipe Herrera, the first Latino to be named U.S. Poet Laureate by the Library of Congress.
Herrera will hold a reading at noon April 22 in the Chalberg Theatre at CLC's Brainerd campus. This literary event is free and open to the public and a book signing and meet and greet will follow the poetry reading.
Herrera is a poet, professor and social activist.
"For decades, Juan has been a joyful, inexhaustible, writer, teacher and social activist, and though his work radiates many themes, he dreams poems that above all seek to palliate suffering, especially that of migrant farm workers," said Jeff Johnson, CLC English instructor and proprietor of Verse Like Water. "His literary imagination is not concerned with inhabiting an America stretching sea to shining sea, but a much larger one-north, central and south where we are all brothers and sisters."
The event is sponsored by Five Wings Arts Council and Minnesota Public Radio.
