Winners were announced in the first annual Fifth Grade Essay Competition by the Brainerd VFW Auxiliary.
The theme was “What the American Flag Means to Me.” Taking first place was Grace Sarvie, a student at St. Francis of the Lakes School. Second was Beyla Goble. Taking third was Max Wehler. All three are from Brainerd.
Winners move on to district, state and national competition.
