The exact cause of death has not been determined, pending the results of a toxicology test by the St. Louis County Medical Examiner. But a release from the Duluth Police Department noted that an oxygen tank was on the scene, and authorities in the same report issued a warning that it is dangerous to smoke in the presence of pure oxygen.
The Duluth Housing and Redevelopment Authority, which owns and operates the building, does not allow smoking in its apartments.
The fire was reported at 4:44 p.m. Saturday and was confined to Hallquist’s unit on the 13th floor; it was extinguished by a sprinkler system.
Foul play is not suspected, according to the police report.
