MINNEAPOLIS -- Wells Fargo will have to remove the rooftop signs it placed on two new office towers next to the new Minnesota Vikings stadium.
U.S. District Judge Donovan Frank ordered the signs removed Thursday after the Vikings sued Wells Fargo late last year.
The new stadium is named for U.S. Bank, the largest competitor of Wells Fargo in Minnesota, and the Vikings attorney called the Wells Fargo signs an attempt to "photo bomb" the aerial images that will be broadcast during NFL games and other events in coming years.
Frank's order leaves open the possibility that Wells Fargo can install flat, painted roof signs as specified in the bank's original agreement with the team, but not the raised and lit signs it installed last year.
A Wells Fargo representative didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. The San Francisco-based bank previously argued that the signs, installed at a cost of $490,000, were within the rights of the deal struck two years ago.
The $1.1 billion U.S. Bank Stadium will formally open later this summer.
