Men from all walks of life will walk a mile in high heels on Aug. 13 to take a stand against rape, sexual and domestic abuse and gender violence.
Male community members and leaders will proclaim their solidarity with the rape prevention movement by walking in high heels, with women and children at their side, a news release stated. Educators, students, law enforcement officers, elected officials and others are expected to participate.
Proceeds from the Aug. 13 event will go to assist the services of Sexual Assault Services Inc. and the Mid-Minnesota Women's Center of Brainerd. The event is at the Mills Ford lot in Baxter. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. with entertainment from Elvis at 11:30 a.m. The walk will start at noon.
Charles Hempeck, the executive director of St. Cloud emergency shelter Anna Marie's Alliance, will speak on the importance of men being involved in the issue of domestic and sexual violence at 12:30 p.m. Refreshments will be available during the event and there will be a silent auction. This will be followed up with prizes and announcement of auction winners.
This year's event will include a raffle drawing for a "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" quilt, designed and donated by Janice Olson of Sew What's Unique. The tickets for the quilt will go on sale beginning Friday and the drawing will take place at the event. The quilt will be on display at the Crow Wing County Fair, in the Victim Services booth across from the Mills Fleet Farm booth.
