WARROAD - Warroad School District is holding a re-dedication of its Warroad Warrior name and logo, according to the district.
The Oct. 1 event falls after the National Coalition Against Racism in Sports and Media sent a letter to the district demanding the name be changed under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, among other suggestions, according to a release.
But after Henry Boucha, a former professional hockey player and U.S. Olympian who is an Ojibwe from Warroad, talked to the coalition board and explained the community's history and support for the logo, the board issued an apology.
โItโs the first time in history that the coalition had rescinded a letter like that and sent out an apology,โ Boucha said. โThey felt it was a mistake going after one of their own communities because we have such a long history with the Ojibwe people.โ
Boucha, who will be speaking at the event, is now vice president for the coalition board after his work with the Warroad name. The coalition will also read a proclamation of support at the re-dedication event.
