It appears the lakes area may get a reprieve from a stretch of damp, gray weather headed into Memorial Day weekend.

The National Weather Service does not expect precipitation either Saturday or Sunday, May 25-26, although Memorial Day itself seems it will add to the above-average rain totals experienced this month.

Saturday is expected to be mostly cloudy with a high near 65 degrees and breezy, with a west wind reaching 10-15 mph. Overnight, wind is projected to continue, giving way to sunny and calm weather Sunday, with temperatures expected to reach 72 degrees. The chance for showers emerges overnight into Monday, with the likelihood increasing into Monday morning. The weather service pegs the chances at 60 percent for precipitation before 1 p.m. Monday.

This May has been a wet one for the lakes area. Through Thursday, online weather data compiled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration notes Brainerd residents have seen 3.52 inches of rain so far. This tops the average of 3.26 inches based on century-old records, with about a week left in the month.

The average high temperature in May so far also falls well below the normal high for the month-60.1 compared to 66.4.
