Brainerd lakes area residents have enjoyed mostly sunny and to partly cloudy skies this week.
When this weekend rolls around, however, they may want to pack an umbrella or a raincoat if they have any outdoor plans this weekend.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected over the weekend, July 24-26, according to the National Weather Service in Duluth.
The first chance of showers and thunderstorms for the Brainerd area is a 20% chance beginning before noon Friday. Partly sunny skies with a high near 89 degrees is in the forecast, with a south wind of 10-15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Friday night there is a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2 a.m., with a low around 72. Brisk winds are expected to continue overnight.
Showers and thunderstorms are likely Saturday, with a high expected to be near 85. Wind gusts may slow down to about 20 mph. Chance of precipitation for Saturday is 70% during the day and 80% at night.
The weather service reported showers and thunderstorms are likely after 1 p.m. Sunday, with the high expected to be near 85 and a low around 59 Sunday night.
Monday — when most folks head back to work — it is expected to be sunny skies with a high near 79.
As of Thursday, July 23, the average monthly temperature in the Brainerd area is 73.9 degrees, with a high temperature of 94 degrees on July 5 and a low temperature of 55 degrees on July 20. This month there were five days where temperatures were at 90 degrees or higher.
According to the climate data from the weather service, the lakes area has had 6.23 inches of precipitation for the month so far, with the greatest amount of 3.33 inches falling July 17-18. Prior to July, 2.64 inches of rain was recorded in June.
