This September, as part of World Alzheimer's Month, the Home Instead Senior Care network is on a mission to educate Americans about Alzheimer's disease.

The initiative encourages people to pledge to learn more about the disease and how to respectfully and compassionately interact with those who live with it.

Thursday is Alzheimer's Learning Day, and Home Instead Senior Care, with an office in Brainerd, will conduct two free educational webinar training from 6-8 p.m. Go to www.AlzLearn.com to register. The webinars will feature leading experts in Alzheimer's and dementia care to better respond to the needs of individuals living with the condition.

Home Instead's Alzheimer's Learning Day hopes to help improve the quality of life for those living with the disease and their caregivers. Currently, more than 15 million Americans provide unpaid care for those living with the disease and nearly 60 percent of individuals with dementia-related diseases live at home with support from family, friends and other members of the community, a news release stated. These caregivers often feel isolated, unsure of how others will act, and are looking for support in their local communities.

Every 66 seconds someone in the U.S. develops Alzheimer's disease, the release stated. The already vast number of people living with the disease is expected to more than triple-from 5 million today to more than 16 million by 2050, unless a cure is found. As these numbers grow, so will the number of family members and friends who will help support their care needs.
