Wild and Free, a nonprofit wildlife rehabilitation program in Garrison, is in need of food donation for its baby bears.
The organization has eight orphaned baby bears right now and aims to help them bulk up so they can gain enough weight for hibernation and be re-released into the wild.
The bears are eating more than anticipated and are in need of donations of acorns, fruit and dry dog food. General Manager Mary Roach said the bears love any sweet produce — berries, watermelon, grapes, etc. Wild and Free has an excess of apple donations and does not need any more, as they may go bad before the bears can eat them. Any brand of dry dog food is acceptable, and acorns should not be mixed with grass clippings or fertilizer.
Food or monetary donations can be dropped off at Garrison Animal Hospital, 27264 Highway 18, or sent to Wild and Free Rehabilitation, PO Box 241, Garrison, MN, 56450.
With no chance to do a capital campaign this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wild and Free is especially in need of monetary donations. As a nonprofit, Wild and Free is completely funded by the community.

Those interested in becoming a member of Wild and Free can do so for a $20 donation. The adopt-an-animal program allows individuals to sponsor a specific animal with donations going toward its care and support. The individual can name the animal and may be allowed to be present for the release back into the wild. Visit http://wildandfree.org/ for more information.
