Well into winter with longer days pointing to spring in the not-too-distant future, the Brainerd lakes area is still firmly in a snow drought.

And a new cold front isn't likely to make much of a dent here, but a wintry mix does have the potential to create slippery surfaces. The National Weather Service in Duluth reports a slight chance for light snow - mainly before noon - today with a high of 24 degrees.

On Friday night, the precipitation may come with snow and sleet. The chance for ice in the form of freezing drizzle or sleet extends into Saturday. There is a chance for freezing drizzle, mainly before noon. And the chance for freezing drizzle is repeated Saturday night before midnight but may turn to a combination of snow and sleet between midnight and 2 a.m.

About 1 inch of snow may fall from the Grand Rapids area to the Twin Ports Friday night.

"More snow is on the horizon for the rest of the weekend with a wintry mix south of U.S. Highway 2," the weather service reported.

Daily high temperatures are near normal through the weekend and into the early part of next week before dropping Thursday. The normal high this time of year is 23 degrees. The highs through the weekend and through Wednesday are expected to be in the 20s. But Thursday is expected to top out at 11 degrees.

The weather service reports after this weekend, the next chance for snow is Tuesday.
