Who wants to be a millionaire?
The network television show proved lots of people would like to be a millionaire.
In Brainerd, a Brainerd woman discovered this past year what it is like to be a multi-millionaire through the luck of the lottery.
In July, Farrah Slad, 21, won the $78.8 million Powerball jackpot. Within 24 hours of the Powerball drawing, Slad claimed her jackpot and set off a media frenzy. As she selected the cash option, Slad received about $50.4 million of the $78.8 million jackpot.
Slad's win was the largest jackpot prize in Minnesota and the third-largest Powerball prize on record.
Slad said she was driving to her parents' home near Baxter the night of the drawing when she stopped at the Holiday Station Store in Baxter to fill her gas tank. She purchased $5 worth of Powerball tickets. And, the rest of the story is history.
From around the world, media organizations clamored for interviews with Slad. The Brainerd Dispatch served as a media center for Slad's interviews with numerous news organizations, including Sky News of England and the Today show of NBC.
At the time, Slad was a mortgage closer with MorNorth Mortgage Corp. on South Sixth Street in Brainerd. Since then, she has resigned her position.
When asked about her winnings, Slad said in July, "I just want to take some time to sit back and think about it for a little while. I'll buy a new car but I'm not gonna blow it all."
Since winning the lottery, Slad has maintained a low profile.
The Powerball winning numbers for Slad were 5-10-12-20-40 and the Powerball was 3. Slad opted for a random computer pick when she purchased her winning ticket.
