Just 22 known active cases of COVID-19 were present in Crow Wing County as of Friday, June 11, and daily figures are on par with the lows of last summer.

Case growth was almost flat in the last week across the seven-county region, with 70 new cases reported total between Aitkin, Cass, Crow Wing, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Todd and Wadena counties.

There were, however, the deaths of four area residents reported, including a Crow Wing County man in his 50s. Other COVID-19 deaths reported by the Minnesota Department of Health include a Crow Wing woman age 85-89, a Morrison County resident age 65-69 and an Aitkin County resident age 95-99. Four new hospitalizations of Crow Wing residents were also recorded this week.

Vaccination rates saw slight improvements in the last week as those ages 12-15 began to receive second doses of the Pfizer vaccine — the only type currently approved for that age group. Four of the seven area counties report more than half of their 12-plus populations received at least one dose, including Aitkin, Crow Wing, Mille Lacs and Wadena. Todd County, however, gained very little ground, now sitting last of all Minnesota counties in terms of its vaccinated population.

More than 87,000 people in the seven-county region have received at least one dose, with those who’ve completed the vaccination series sitting at just over 81,000. Still, the older population remains disproportionately represented among the vaccinated in north-central Minnesota. In the state as a whole, 54.5% of the vaccinated population is over age 50. In the region, that figure ranges from a low of 69.9% in Mille Lacs County to a high of 80.4% in Aitkin County.
