Essentia Health is hosting an advance care planning class from 11 a.m. to noon on Friday, April 16, which is National Healthcare Decisions Day.
Another class will be offered from noon to 1 p.m. May 12.
National Healthcare Decisions Day exists to inspire, educate and empower the public and providers about the importance of advance care planning.
Advance care planning is a process designed to help people think and talk about their choices for health care in the future. Essentia reports it is important for every adult to have an advance directive, also known as a living will or health care directive.
Everyone is invited to join in the thought-provoking conversation to discover the value of advance care planning, reflect on your values, choose a health care agent, explore goals for treatment and take steps toward completing a health care directive for themselves.

By having these conversations proactively, individuals can ensure their preferences are understood if they become unable to make medical decisions for themselves due to an accident, injury or sudden illness.
