ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Department of Health on Tuesday, Jan. 18, reported continued growth in metrics for the overall public health risk posed by COVID-19 as it reached its 11,000 death from the virus.
The seven-day rolling average test positivity rate as of Jan. 7, the most recently available date for that figure, was 22.2%. That breaks the pandemic record for the seventh daily report in a row. The seven-day rolling average for new cases per 100,000 also continued to climb into record territory — 172.8.
Both figures are well beyond the threshold set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as "high-risk" — 10% for tests and 10 cases per 100,000.
Meanwhile, officials reported 10,651 new cases and 1,610 hospitalizations for COVID-19. After dipping slightly in late December, the number of hospitalizations for COVID-19 started to grow again amid a wave of new cases driven by the highly contagious omicron variant of the virus.
The surge has placed sustained pressure on Minnesota health care resources, with 95% of adult and pediatric intensive care unit beds occupied. There has been a shortage of ICU beds in the state for the past two months.
