College Volleyball: Raiders to play for third
ROCHESTER— Kayla Larson finished with 11 kills, three digs and two blocks for the No. 3 seeded Central Lakes College Raiders as they fell in 3-0 in the semifinals against No. 2 Eastfield College in the NJCAA Division III tournament Friday.
CLC's Cassie Smieja added four kills and three digs. Kahlen Manthey collected seven digs.
"They're really good," said CLC head coach Jane Peterson. "They were just physically bigger, stronger and more experienced and we hung with them. We played OK. We were tough, but they were really good."
In the quarterfinals, Central Lakes sent No. 6 seeded Northampton into the consolation bracket with a 3-0 drubbing.
Becca Jensen registered nine kills and four blocks. Larson added eight kills, four digs and two blocks and Paige Wallevand tallied three kills, 10 set assists and two ace serves.
"We got ahead and stayed ahead," Peterson said. "I don't think we were ever behind. That was good. We served well and passed well and played good defense."
The Raiders finished with 11 ace serves compared to three from the Spartans.
CLC falls into the third-place match where it will face Columbus State.
"The team we play is not as physically imposing as the Texas team," Peterson said. "Hopefully, there will be a little more volleyball. It could be a good match if we play well.
"It will be one last chance to try to be the best we can be. That's the goal. We've improved so much at so many things and a lot of them showed up (Friday)."
