ATV crash kills Rice woman: Driver in jail

GENOLA—A 37-year-old Rice woman was killed Saturday, Oct. 6, when an all-terrain vehicle she was a passenger on crashed on the Soo-Line Trail, near 280th Avenue in Pierz Township, east of Genola.

The Morrison County Sheriff's Office was called at 8:17 p.m. to a side-by-side ATV crash. It was reported a 45-year-old Royalton man was operating the ATV, which was traveling west on the Soo-Line Trail. After crossing the intersection of 280th Avenue near Genola, the ATV rolled. A passenger on the ATV, Karla Scheel, was ejected from the ATV and trapped underneath. Scheel was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Royalton man was taken into custody and to the Morrison County Jail, pending formal charges for criminal vehicular operation.

The fatal crash is under investigation by the Morrison County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota State Patrol. The Pierz Fire and Rescue, Pierz Police Department, Life Link III and Gold Cross Ambulance assisted at the scene.
